Tragically, a woman was killed at the Palestine Post Office Thursday morning, Aug. 8, 2013.
According to the Palestine Police Department, at approximately 10:12 a.m. on Thursday, Sumiko Coleman, 87, drove into the post office parking lot in a blue four-door 2003 Cadillac STS and allowed her husband to exit the vehicle.
Coleman then, according to witnesses, stepped out of the driver’s side of the car and began walking toward the back of the car. The car was still running when Coleman exited the vehicle and it began rolling backward, out of the parking space, striking Coleman, knocking her down to the ground, at which time it rolled over and killed the elderly woman.
It is not clear at this time whether the vehicle was left in reverse or whether there was a mechanical failure at the time of the accident. The vehicle was placed in park by an unidentified bystander prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Wesley. An autopsy will be performed by the Forensic Medical Management Services of Texas in Tyler.
