William Everett Cole, Jr, age 59, of Grapeland, Texas, went home to be with the Lord, on December 6, 2013. He was born May 7, 1949 in Raleigh, N.C. and will be laid to rest beside his father, William E. Cole, Sr at Guiceland Cemetery. Walter Vernon Starling

Walter Vernon StarlingMr. Walter Vernon Starling, age 84, of Crockett, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013 at his residence.  He was born August 15, 1929 in Kennard and had lived in Crockett most of his lifetime.  Mr. Starling was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict.  He was retired from Travel Quest in Crockett and was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include daughters, Janice Martin of Crockett, Sharon Kirksey of Crockett; grandchildren, Charles LaRue and wife, Trisha of Crockett, Jason LaRue and wife, Vicki of Possum Walk, Jeremy LaRue and wife, Ashley of Lovelady, Justin Martin and wife, Amber of Crockett, Nicholas Martin and wife, Jennifer of Trinity, Kenneth Kirksey and wife, Amber of Crockett, Carla Miles and husband, Jonathan of Georgia, Daniel Starling of Maine, Tanya Lester and husband, Mark of Pasadena, Jennifer Cedillo of Pasadena, Jamie Starling and wife of Pasadena, Derek Starling of Crockett; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Herman Starling and wife, Nelda of Pasadena, Thomas Starling of Crockett; sister, Lois Braswell and husband, Shelby of Kennard; special friend, Martha of Palestine; dear friend, Debra Littleton of Crockett.  Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.  Preceded in death by wife, Evelyn Starling; sons, Ricky Starling and Vernon Lynn Starling.

Funeral services for Mr. Walter Vernon Starling were held Monday, December 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Danny AllumsDanny Allums, Jr., age 37, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 in the Nacogdoches Medical Center.  He was born July 11, 1976 in Nacogdoches and had lived in Crockett most of his lifetime.  Danny was of the Pentecostal faith and attended Cushing Apostolic Church of Cushing.

Survivors include parents, Danny and Gail Allums of Crockett; sisters, Melina Crockett and husband, Lenard of Crockett, Pamela Allums of Crockett, Lavada “Danya” Allums of Nacogdoches; nieces and nephew, Amanda Crockett, April Crockett and Lenard Crockett, Jr.; numerous other relatives.  Preceded in death by grandparents, Richard and Bertha Emmons, Truman and Florence Allums; uncle and aunt, Frank and Shirley Allums and numerous other relatives.

Ruth Whitehead Hamilton Butler

Mrs. Ruth Whitehead Hamilton Butler, 86, passed away December 9, 2013. She was born December 2, 1927. Ruth is survived by her husband John Frank Butler, her sister Elsie Kinnard, her two sons, Terry and Hank Hamilton, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her parents, John and Olivia; her brothers, Clifton, Eacle, Decater, and Frank; her sisters, Maddie, Adelle, Eunice, and Almer; her husband, Odie Hamilton; and her beloved daughter, Delores McLean.  Services will be held at Callaway-Allee Funeral Home in Crockett at noon on Tuesday the 17th.  Condolences for Mrs. Butler may be left at online obituaries http://www.callawayallee.com/.

Arthur L. Sanders

Arthur SandersMr. Arthur L. Sanders, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed on to be with his beloved wife on Saturday, December 7, and is now absent from the body and present with the Lord. He was a long time member of the Methodist church, and taught many about the Bible in Sunday school classes in both Crockett and Houston. He was a graduate of Sam Houston State University and worked in accounting retiring from Stauffer Chemical in the position of Assistant Chief Accountant. He is survived by daughters Marilyn Townsend and husband, Oliver and Marcia Wood and husband, Ron, grandchildren Diane Kingshill and David Townsend, and great grandchildren Taylor Brady, Ashton Townsend, and Robert Townsend, numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. Preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Nell Sanders. The family is especially grateful to the staff at Houston County Nursing Home who took such loving care of him during his last year.

We are all in debt for his service in World War II where he served for three years as a member of General McArthur’s staff in both the Phillipines and Japan.

Private graveside funeral services for Mr. Arthur L. Sanders will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Evergreen Memorial Park.  Interment will follow.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Wilmer “Pete” Taylor

Pete TaylorMr. Wilmer “Pete” Taylor, age 90, of Kennard, passed away Monday, December 9, 2013 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett.  He was born October 1, 1923 in Kennard and had lived in Kennard since 1984, previously living in Pasadena for 20 years.  When he was 7 years old he was shot in his leg and arm and it affected him for the rest of his life. In 1935-1936, he traveled with his Dad and a group of men invited by Congressman Nat Patton to Washington D. C. to persuade federal agencies to provide some money for the construction of  new facilities for the Kennard School and a new brick building was constructed and was used by elementary students this building included restrooms. Mr. Taylor graduated from Kennard High School in 1940.  He married Frankie Mae Shields on July 18, 1956 in Crockett, Texas.  In 1960, he was selected as one out of 40 to receive a fellowship from the National Science Foundation.  He attended a pilot program sponsored by Texas A&M to prepare science teachers to teach Earth Science.  Mr. Taylor was a member of the Coltharp Masonic Lodge #419 receiving Master Mason in 1988 and was a city council member. Mr. Taylor retired in 1983, having worked 5 years in Houston County Vocational Schools in Grapeland, 1 year in Aldine Schools, 2 years at Smiley High School and 24 years at Southmore Intermediate with the Pasadena Independent School District.  He had also worked 1 year for Crockett Production Credit Association, 2 years for Humble Oil Refinery in Baytown, and he managed his land and timber business. Mr. Taylor was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pasadena and First Baptist Church in Kennard.

Survivors include son, Wayne Taylor and wife, Terrie; grandchildren, Brett Wayne Taylor and Kayla Lynn Taylor; niece, DeLoyd English Rudloff; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by wife, Frankie Mae Shields Taylor; parents, Willie Wayne Taylor and Sallie Miller Tunstall Taylor; sister, Willie Vera Taylor English and husband, Loyd English.

Funeral services for Mr. Wilmer “Pete” Taylor will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Kennard with Rev. Kent with FishKent McNabb, age 51, of Crockett, passed away Saturday, December 07, 2013, at his home.  Kent was born May 3, 1962 in Hereford, Texas and had lived in Crockett for most of his lifetime.  He had worked for Crockett Sand and Gravel for 34 years.  Kent enjoyed fishing and was a member of a Bass Club in Crockett.

Survivors include wife, Darla McNabb of Crockett; son, David McNabb of Crockett; daughter, Kayla Mitchell and fiancé, Eric Mendez of Crockett; grandson, Isaac Mendez of Crockett; parents, Dick and Ann McNabb of Crockett; sister, Debra Taylor and husband, Phil of The Woodlands; nephews, Alex Taylor of The Woodlands, Travis Taylor of The Woodlands; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Darlene and Marion Lane of Lovelady; father-in-law, Kenneth Mahanay of Crockett; brothers-in-law, Bryant Mahanay and wife, Melissa of Porter Springs, Keith Mahanay and wife, Jessica of Lake Jackson; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.  Preceded in death aunts, Charlene Ward, Nancy Johnson and grandparents, Richard and Louise Quickel.

Conaway, age 89, of Crockett, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013 in the Memorial City Hospital in Houston.  He was born April 24, 1924 in Arbor, Texas and had lived in Crockett for the past 30 years.  Mr. Conaway was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II.  He was a member of the Crockett Lions Club, First Baptist Church and attended the Shady Grove Baptist Church.  Mr. Conaway was retired having owned and operator Duo-Fast in Houston.

Survivors include children, Steve Conaway and wife, Wendy of Houston, Chuck Conaway of Pasadena, Lynna Bond and husband, Randy of Houston, David Fleming and wife, Pat of Bastrop; grandchildren, Shawna, Crissy, Keith, Kim, Lesa, Kara, Keli, Lloyd, Michael, Dylan, Austin, Jason and Jeremy; twenty great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.  Preceded in death by wives, Virginia Fay Conaway, Barbara Reed Conaway; son, Chris Conaway; parents, Asa and Iva Conaway; brothers, Paul, Clifford, Emory and sisters, Marie, Doris and Betty Jo.
